I was surfing the web tonight & stubbled as across this wonderful site!!
Thanks Tom M !!
My family moved to Chicago in the early 60's were I soon became acquainted with
this wonderful game of Hockey. After a couple of years we moved back to Nashville
& I soon learned that in my absence "we" had acquired our own team..... the Nashville Dixie Flyers.
The Flyers were named after the passenger train that ran from Florida to (ironically) to Chicago ... the Dixie Flyer.
This site & forum has brought back many a fond memory of my early days of hockey &
the many nights watching the Flyers play at our area, the Municipal Auditorium (which had a very small rink).
It was a different era of hockey..... no curve sticks, no goalie masks even the "Auditorium" did not have
the plexiglass around the boards to protect the crowd from shots. Instead it had a heavy wire mess so you
did not see the "face wash" in the glass as you see now.
In time I hope to posts the rosters from the programs with the players numbers in hopes to establish a database
for all the teams players numbers.
In the meantime I do have a couple of requests.
I would like to see if any of you guys have any game used sweaters (jerseys) of the old EHL teams.
I have seen none for the Flyers to date as I assumed they were used into "oblivion" as budgets & equipment were
scare back in this day.
Also I have a question.
I have always assumed the Flyers did not have a "road" Uniform & always played games in their gold & purple sweaters
and did not have a white road uniform.
Newspaper photos of road games were nonexistent in this period & I was never fortunate to see the Flyers play
on the road.
Did any of you see the Flyers play on the road & what kind of uniforms did they have ??
A couple of photos of late have surfaced & suggest a possible "white" uniform but I can not say for certain as they are black & photos.
Here's one of Loyld Hinchberger for 1964-65.
What do you think??
Thanks again... a wonderful site !!
